  • Notes
    • Miriam was born on 17 May 1861 in the small village of Bridge near Canterbury in Kent. Her father was the grocer there and she was his eldest child - with 3 younger brothers and 2 younger sisters. Her family moved from Kent to Rotherham in the 1870s. There is no clear reason for the move so it is assumed it was for economic motives.

In the 1881 census, Miriam was living with her parents in Rotherham and working as a confectioner's assistant. Two years later, described as a waitress, she gave birth to an illegitimate daughter, May Davis. She had the child at Priory Grange, Sharrow Lane, Ecclesall Bierlow - a house belonging to a George Tyzack. Her daughter, May appears to have been fostered - probably from birth - by Richard Orton (a confectioner in Rotherham) and his wife Mary who moved to Conisbrough before 1891. They had no children of their own. It is possible that May never knew her mother.

Miriam Manetta Davis went on to marry George Marples, on 1 March 1888 at St Barnabas, Sheffield. Their son, Frank, was born the same year. George did not live to enjoy his marriage for long as he died on 10 July 1889 in Wentworth, Yorkshire - the village where Miriam's parents were then living.

Miriam Manetta Marples then moved in with a coal miner named Isaac Goodman. In the 1891 census she was described as his housekeeper and he was married but with no sign of his wife. By the 1901 census, the couple were described as married. There were two children of the match - Winnie (born c. 1893) and Vessey (born 1895 - killed at Gallipoli on 21 August 1915). However, no marriage did take place as is evidenced by Miriam's death certificate the following year, when her surname reverted to Marples. She died, aged just 41, on 10 July 1902 in Swinton, Yorkshire in the house she shared with Isaac.
